Role summary

  • To continually provide and improve GIS services across the Cairn Organisation and to ensure data, processes and systems are fit for purpose

Areas of responsibility

GIS Support Duties

  • Provide daily support and advice to Cairn’s GIS user community
  • Ensure service levels and response to GIS users is of a high standard
  • Provide data loading and data management of a range of geo-spatial data types
  • Improve GIS data management within the existing corporate framework of Data Management and apply best practise,  standards and workflows
  • Work with key stakeholders in IM, Exploration, Supply Chain and Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) to assess potential GIS contributions in support of Cairn operations
  • Monitor and control the QC of geodetic work undertaken by 3rd parties
  • Regular reporting and communication with users and management (particularly IM line management)
  • Work collaboratively with the Data Management Team Lead to ensure handling of user requests are screened, prioritised and resolved effectively
  • In consultation with the Data Management Team Lead make sure effective project plans are documented and communicated thoroughly
  • Provide regular reports to the Head of Department and Data Management team Lead on any user workflow, data and visualisation requests to improve the IM planning process
  • Act as the Cairn focal point for Cairn’s GIS partner ESRI UK Ltd

GIS Systems & Applications Support

  • Good practical working knowledge of ArcGIS for Desktop, Server, Mobile and ArcGIS Online
  • Assist in planning and requirements for new hardware for servers and workstations
  • Coordinate the installation of software and patches for ESRI product suite when required
  • Responsible for the setup and continuous improvement of Cairn’s GIS portal capability
  • Provide specialist support to maximise  the benefits of  Cairn’s GIS technology portfolio
  • Perform some coding, scripting and administration tasks in support of Cairn’s GIS portal environment
  • Support Information & Data Management integration strategies that incorporate a GIS component architecture

GIS Data Management

  • Promote industry best practice in support of GIS data controls in line with Cairn Data Management strategies that meet access, security and quality standards
  • Assist  Data Management in defining, implementing and supporting corporate and Master Data Management  standards
  • Manage 3rd party data sets (e.g. IHS, Deloitte, Wood Mackenzie, DrillingInfo)
  • Assist in the transmittal of data  to partners and government
  • Assist in the integration/visualisation of well and seismic data with ESRI tools
  • Work at a detailed level to populate corporate Geodatabases
  • Build the necessary policies, procedures, standards and work instructions in the management and handling of GIS data as necessary

Operating Network (Internal/External Stakeholders):

  • Close working relationship with the Exploration, New Ventures, Commercial, Legal, Operations, HSE, Supply Chain and IM teams
  • Ability to communicate with IM management team and users to meet agreed deliverables
  • Build relationships with key suppliers and consultants to extract value for the business
  • Create good working relationship with potential GIS Users in regional offices

Skills/Experience Required


  • Degree qualified in a GIS or Earth Science discipline  with significant GIS experience in an E&P company is preferred

Relevant experience

  • Awareness, knowledge and proven hands-on experience working with spatial data
  • Proven experience with ESRI suite including ArcGIS for Desktop, Server, Mobile and AGOL
  • Demonstrable experience in project planning, delivery and reporting to Line management
  • Proven experience in defining and implementing GIS data management workflows and standards
  • Demonstrable evidence of the ability to analyse and manipulate complex data sets for the purposes of integration and visualisation
  • Evidence of MS Windows skills
  • Tangible evidence in the use of GIS in E&P projects including the use of well, seismic, gravity, magnetics and map  data
  • Good working knowledge of E&P Data Management and workflow practices
  • Second experience
